Leon Sweeney
Early work
Leon began his involvement in music culture as a DJ in his teens, influenced by his stepfather’s record collection and early UK grime and house scenes.
He started by recording and sharing mix tapes with friends and playing at house parties, developing a strong understanding of records, DJs and audience energy.
Over time he became more interested in bringing people together around music rather than producing tracks himself, building a role as a coordinator and organiser within creative communities.
Current work
Leon now focuses on project coordination and artist development through Soul Quest Records, an independent label and collaborative platform supporting DJs and producers. His work involves organising events, connecting artists, and helping shape how music and visual culture are presented. He has produced label nights, supported releases for emerging artists and built networks with record shops, DJs and venues both in the UK and internationally.
R&D work
This research and development project focuses on strengthening the infrastructure around Leon’s work. He will complete a music business management course at Tileyard to develop professional knowledge in distribution, contracts and strategy. He will also travel to New York and Miami to research US vinyl pressing and build relationships with record shops. Alongside this, he will prototype a mobile DJ van equipped with a sound system to test a flexible pop up model for presenting music and visual art outside traditional venues.
Future work
Following the R&D period, Leon plans to use the van as a mobile platform for touring DJ events, artist showcases and collaborative projects across the UK and Europe. The distribution relationships developed in the US will support future releases from Soul Quest Records and expand the label’s international reach. Longer term, Leon aims to develop a community focused creative hub that combines music production, events and artist collaboration.
